The Sukanacagi Blue Light Brothers 7s rugby team, comprising young men from Vitogo and Naiviyago in Lautoka, is competing in their inaugural 7s rugby tournament at the Fiji Sports Council U20 7s held at Lawaqa Park. Transitioning from a traditional focus on fifteens rugby and local club games within the Lautoka Rugby Union, this marks a significant new chapter for the team.

The name “Blue Light” signifies more than just the team’s identity; it is part of a youth empowerment initiative organized by the Fiji Police Force in collaboration with New Zealand’s Blue Light organization. This program aims to foster relationships between law enforcement and young people, promoting the development of leadership skills and encouraging positive lifestyle choices among youths.

Pastor Aliveo Qereqeretabua, who collaborates with the Fiji Police Force in Vitogo, highlighted the program’s vital role in supporting youth engagement. He stated, “Involving them in sports is a great way to keep them away from drugs and other illegal activities.” He expressed pride in the participation of unemployed youths from Vitogo and Naiviyago in this tournament.

Through their participation in rugby, the Sukanacagi Blue Light Brothers are not only honing their athletic skills but are also fostering a more united and resilient community. This initiative represents a positive step towards empowering youth and connecting them with positive influences.

This story showcases the transformative power of sports, serving as a platform for youth development and community building. It highlights how initiatives like the Blue Light program can profoundly impact young lives, steering them toward healthy choices and greater opportunities.
