Rugby has a transformative impact on the lives of many athletes, and this is evident in Nausori, Nalawa, where the sport is making a significant difference. The Vatukoro under-19 team, sponsored by Supercool, exemplifies this positive influence, showcasing discipline and dedication both on and off the field.
Coach Ilai Nameke has noticed substantial changes since introducing the players to sevens rugby. Formed earlier this year as an under-20 team, they recently participated in the Wairiki 7s tournament held in Taveuni. Nameke expressed his pride in the squad, emphasizing that their commitment to maintaining discipline is helping them avoid illegal activities and the associated consequences.
Following the success at Wairiki, Nameke expanded the team by recruiting younger players under the age of 19 to participate in the RC Manubhai 7s tournament at Ratu Cakobau Park, which concluded recently. The coach praised the team for reaching the cup semi-final in the under-19 division, a significant achievement that was beyond their initial expectations. “This is a village-based team, these kids have the talent to play rugby, so we’ve given them this opportunity to showcase through the club. We are thankful to God for bringing us here,” he acknowledged.
Looking ahead, Vatukoro now aims to compete in the Fiji Bitter Savusavu 7s scheduled for January 16-18, marking another chapter in their promising journey.
This story not only highlights the importance of sports in developing young talent but also illustrates how rugby can foster positive behaviors and community spirit among youth. By encouraging discipline and teamwork, initiatives like these can lead to long-lasting benefits for both the players and their communities.
