A youthful team from Naboutini Village showcased their skills by clinching victory in the Shield Final of the Mick’s Fiji Tours & Transfers Vatulele 7s 2024 tournament, defeating the local team Bainivualiku Vatulele 24-7. This secondary school-aged squad participated in the two-day event not just to compete, but to gain valuable experience and steer the players away from the dangers of illicit drugs.
Team coach Setefano Naitonicagi expressed his joy after the match, attributing their success to higher powers and praising the team’s health during the tournament. “We thank God for this win and for our safety throughout,” Naitonicagi stated. He emphasized the team’s formation was rooted in creating a positive environment for the youth, many of whom are in their critical schooling years.
In preparation for the tournament, the team camped at the Naboutini Village Hall, engaging in rigorous training sessions on the Sigatoka Sand Dunes. Naitonicagi viewed their Shield victory as just the start, encouraging the players to aspire for further achievements. “This is just the beginning. We will participate in more tournaments during the school holidays,” he affirmed.
The coach also expressed gratitude towards the villagers and supporters, acknowledging their prayers and encouragement throughout their journey. This victory not only brings pride to Naboutini Village but also serves as a beacon of hope for young athletes striving for a brighter future.
This story illustrates the power of sports as a means to uplift and guide young individuals away from negative influences, instilling a sense of community and purpose. As the young players continue their journey, it is clear that their potential is limitless, and this victory may very well be the first of many.
