The Fiji Bitter Nacula, Yasawa 7s is not just a rugby tournament; it serves a significant purpose in supporting education and cultivating young talent in the Yasawa Islands. This year, the event will donate $10,000 to both Ratu Meli Primary School and Yasawa North Secondary School during a presentation at Churchill Park.
Tournament coordinator Mosese Susu disclosed that the funds will be handed over to the principals of the schools as well as Turaga Na Tui Drola, Ratu Manasa Naikasowalu. He explained that the donations are aimed at enhancing educational facilities and providing essential opportunities for budding athletes.
Over the previous two years, funds generated from the tournament have been utilized to repair classrooms, construct housing for teachers, and supply students with essential food rations for the year. This year’s contribution will be made publicly, ensuring transparency and accountability, according to Susu.
The tournament’s theme, “Breeding Champions from Grassroots to Greatness,” reflects the organizers’ commitment to steering youth away from drugs and unlawful activities by creating avenues through sports to identify and foster athletic talent. Susu expressed their ambition to support young people from the grassroots level and develop pathways that lead to club, provincial, and potentially national teams like the Fijian Drua.
The event has garnered substantial backing from co-sponsors. Vodafone is supporting the women’s division, Kasabias is sponsoring the U21 category, while South Seas and Blue Lagoon are assisting referees. Vomo Island Resort is providing ambulance services, Esthers Sea Food is taking care of meals for officials, and Siliva Nacagi is financing team and official ID cards. Additionally, Tanoa Waterfront and Lautoka Hotel have also extended their support.
Susu urged fans to attend in large numbers, stressing that the entry fees will directly benefit the schools and the community. “Every ticket purchased contributes to a brighter future for our children and our sports,” he noted.
