The Fiji Bitter Nacula, Yasawa 7s rugby tournament serves a dual purpose: to celebrate sport and to foster education and the development of young talent in the Yasawa Islands. This year, organizers announced a significant contribution of $10,000 earmarked for Ratu Meli Primary School and Yasawa North Secondary School, set to be presented at Churchill Park.
According to tournament coordinator Mosese Susu, the allocated funds will be handed over to the schools’ leadership and Turaga Na Tui Drola, Ratu Manasa Naikasowalu. Susu emphasized that the tournament is dedicated to enhancing school facilities and providing opportunities for young athletes. Over the past two years, proceeds from the event have significantly impacted the schools, funding repairs for classrooms, constructing teachers’ accommodations, and supplying a year’s worth of food for students.
The upcoming presentation will highlight the transparency and accountability of the initiative. Susu mentioned the theme of this year’s tournament, “Breeding Champions from Grassroots to Greatness,” which aims to divert youth from drugs and illegal activities by paving pathways in sports that can help them realize their potential.
“Our goal is to assist youths from the grassroots level and create pathways to help them reach club, provincial, and possibly national teams, such as the Fijian Drua,” he stated.
The tournament has garnered robust support from various co-sponsors, including Vodafone for the women’s division, Kasabias for the U21 category, South Seas and Blue Lagoon for referees, alongside many others contributing vital services and resources.
Susu urged rugby fans to attend the event in large numbers, noting that the entrance fees will directly benefit the schools and their communities. “Every ticket purchased contributes to a brighter future for our children and our sports,” he stressed.
This initiative is not only a celebration of rugby but also a testament to the community’s commitment to empowering youth through education and sport, making it a hopeful outlook for the future of the Yasawa Islands.
