Holy Trinity Primary School recently took part in the Get Into Rugby Plus Festival, a primary school rugby event that spotlighted young sporting talent while promoting values and sportsmanship. The festival was held earlier this week at Bidesi Ground in Laucala Bay, Suva.
Ana Sorovi, the GIR Plus coach for Holy Trinity, expressed her team’s eagerness to participate in the one-day festival, which she described as a new experience for both the players and their parents. Sorovi emphasized that the event was not merely a competition, but an opportunity to teach and demonstrate the rules of rugby and the DRIPS principles—discipline, respect, integrity, passion, and solidarity—that are integral to the GIR Plus program. These values are designed to enhance not only the players’ experiences on the field but also their life skills in the school and community.
The team dedicated significant time to preparing through 16 essential skill sets that were integrated into their classes, ensuring that the players could learn and apply these lessons effectively. Although Holy Trinity and the other participating schools were unable to finish the games due to heavy rain, they each received a commemorative trophy, highlighting their participation and achievements at the festival.
This event illustrates a positive blend of sports and personal development, encouraging young athletes to embrace core values that will serve them beyond the rugby field. The dedication of the coaches and the response of the community demonstrate a hopeful investment in the future of these young players, shaping them into both skilled athletes and responsible individuals.
