Holy Trinity Primary School recently participated in the Get Into Rugby Plus Festival, an event dedicated to showcasing young athletic talent while promoting essential values associated with the sport. The festival was held at Bidesi Ground in Laucala Bay, Suva, and drew the excitement of students, parents, and coaches alike.
Ana Sorovi, the GIR Plus coach for Holy Trinity, highlighted her team’s eagerness to engage in this enriching experience. “We’re looking forward to attending this festival; it’s something new for them and even for the parents,” she remarked. The event aimed to teach participants about rugby rules, particularly the DRIPS principles: discipline, respect, integrity, passion, and solidarity. These values are integral to the GIR Plus program, aiming to embed meaningful lessons in sports within students’ lives, both on and off the field.
Sorovi shared that the team had been preparing to incorporate about 16 skillsets into their training, ensuring that students effectively learned these principles. Unfortunately, the festival was cut short due to heavy rain, but Holy Trinity, along with other schools, returned home with commemorative trophies.
This event not only provided valuable rugby training but also fostered community spirit and collaboration among participating schools. It demonstrates a promising initiative by schools to integrate sports with life skills, ultimately contributing to the holistic development of young athletes.
In summary, the festival served as a stage for youth development through sports, emphasizing the transformative power of rugby beyond physical activity. The future seems bright for young athletes as they learn essential values that will guide them in their sports journey and life.
