Former Fiji Rugby Union financial accountant Pawan Deo and his wife, Subhashni Mudaliar, have pleaded not guilty to serious charges regarding financial misconduct. The couple appeared in the Suva Magistrate’s Court, facing allegations of conspiracy to defraud, unlawfully obtaining a financial advantage, and improper gain related to their roles as proprietors of Sports Supplies Limited (SSL).

The prosecution claims that between February 1 and July 31, 2022, Deo, acting as the financial accountant for the Fiji Rugby Union while managing SSL with Mudaliar, colluded with her to wrongfully acquire a total of FJD $53,788.75 from the Union. They have also been accused of facilitating fraudulent payments resulting in an unlawful gain of FJD $7,291.83 for SSL, despite their knowledge of the company’s ineligibility to receive those funds between February 1 and May 11, 2022.

The prosecution’s lawyer, Ravinesh Lal, confirmed full disclosures had been made to the accused, and their legal representation expressed intention to seek a reconsideration of the charges from the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC). Following their hearing, the couple’s bail was extended, with the next court appearance scheduled for February 28.

This case highlights significant concerns about financial governance and integrity within organizations managing public funds, particularly in the sports sector, which has faced increasing scrutiny. The outcome of this legal proceeding could not only affect Deo and Mudaliar but may also lead to enhanced transparency and accountability measures within sports organizations in Fiji.

As the case unfolds, it reiterates the importance of the presumption of innocence until proven guilty and emphasizes the need for strict adherence to ethical standards in financial management. The ongoing scrutiny may ultimately result in stronger regulatory frameworks that promote integrity within the sports community.

Summary: Pawan Deo and Subhashni Mudaliar have pleaded not guilty to fraud charges connected to their operation of SSL and the Fiji Rugby Union, with their next court date set for February 28. The case underscores ongoing issues related to accountability and transparency in sports governance.
