Peceli Rinakama, the president of the Naitasiri Rugby Union, has voiced his concerns over the ongoing dispute between the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) and senior players of the Flying Fijians. In an interview, Rinakama addressed allegations made by team captain Waisea Nayacalevu and other players regarding unpaid contracts and unfulfilled commitments to both players and coaching staff.
Rinakama expressed his disappointment regarding the situation, stating, “I am really unhappy to hear that the Fiji players were not properly paid by the FRU.” He called for governmental intervention in the matter, emphasizing that the Prime Minister, the Minister for Sports, and the Government should become involved given their integral role in the sport’s operations in Fiji.
He underscored that such intervention is critical, especially considering rugby’s significance in enhancing Fiji’s global reputation. Rinakama personally appealed to the Prime Minister for assistance, highlighting that rugby is a national sport that showcases Fiji on an international platform.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka had earlier indicated that speculation regarding financial mismanagement involving rugby players should be brought up at the FRU’s Annual General Meeting and investigated properly. He remarked that the Government would refrain from intervening, respecting the FRU’s decision to manage its own affairs without government involvement. Rinakama noted that the ongoing issues could discourage potential players from competing for positions in the national team in the future.
He stated, “Before we used to play rugby for entertainment, but not now. It is a means of living for players overseas and likewise for players who are in the local clubs right now.” Additionally, Rinakama encouraged all rugby unions to collaborate in preparation for the upcoming FRU Annual General Meeting scheduled for November.
