The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Accident Compensation Commission Fiji (ACCF) have joined forces with the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) to tackle the issue of road accidents and fatalities across Fiji. LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized that this partnership is targeted at enhancing road safety compliance and encouraging adherence to traffic regulations among Fijian drivers by utilizing the significant influence of rugby players and the expansive reach of the FRU.
“This innovative partnership acknowledges the pivotal role of sports, especially rugby, in shaping societal attitudes in Fiji,” Rokosawa stated. Rugby players, who enjoy immense popularity and respect, are seen as ideal advocates for promoting responsible road use.
Over the next four years, LTA, ACCF, and FRU aim to cultivate a culture of road safety awareness and responsibility within the community. “Rugby serves as a unifying force in Fiji, and the impact of its players transcends the boundaries of the field,” added Rokosawa.
He further highlighted that this collaboration sends a strong message that achieving road safety is a shared responsibility among all citizens. The General Manager of FRU, Avnil Pratap, reiterated their commitment to the well-being of Fijians both on and off the field, expressing, “Rugby players are role models in our communities, and their voices carry significant influence.” He hopes that this initiative will inspire positive behaviors and encourage everyone to prioritize safety on the roads.
This partnership not only aims to lower road accident rates but also seeks to create a more safety-conscious society, potentially transforming how communities interact with road safety. By engaging beloved sports figures, there is great hope that these efforts will resonate deeply, fostering a collective movement towards safer roads in Fiji.
