Former Fiji rugby sevens star Masivesi Dakuwaqa, recently dismissed by Biarritz Olympique, has publicly expressed regret following an incident where he allegedly bit teammate Pierre Pagès during a team gathering that involved excessive drinking. In an interview with Le’ Equipe, he admitted to experiencing a blackout during the drinking session, leading to the unfortunate altercation.
Dakuwaqa, who was part of the victorious Fiji team at the 2016 Rio Olympics, described the team event as an effort to boost morale after a series of defeats. However, he recounted waking up in a drunk tank without any recollection of the preceding events. He attributed this memory loss to his heavy alcohol consumption, acknowledging, “I drank too many beers.”
The bite inflicted on Pagès was severe enough that he required 20 stitches on his right cheek. Dakuwaqa expressed disbelief over his actions, stating, “I don’t understand how I could have done this.” Though he has not yet reached out to Pagès, he has publicly sought forgiveness, saying, “I would like to hug him and say ‘Forgive me’. I am shocked by what I have done.”
In light of the incident and its ramifications, Dakuwaqa has made a promise to his wife to abstain from alcohol in the future. He is scheduled to appear before the Bayonne Criminal Court on May 30 to address the situation.
This incident highlights the impact of alcohol on decision-making and behavior, particularly in high-pressure environments like sports. Dakuwaqa’s acknowledgment of his mistake and commitment to change presents a hopeful narrative for personal growth and accountability.
