Rauto Vakadranu, a member of the Fiji Airways Fijian men’s rugby squad, has sent a strong message to fellow players about the importance of adhering to the law during the festive season. The 27-year-old corrections officer emphasized that the Christmas and New Year celebrations can often lead to increased temptations and potential trouble.
A talented athlete from Namosi, Vakadranu has had a notable year, competing in the Vancouver and Los Angeles legs of the SVNS series and recently representing the national team at the Mataso 7s tournament. He is determined to fight for his place in the main team and is focused on his goal of playing in another leg by 2025.
Acknowledging the intense competition within the squad, Vakadranu stated, “It’s quite tough to secure your spot with the number of talented players in the squad.” He is the only player from the Wardens in the current extended national squad and reflects on how playing with accomplished teammates has motivated him to enhance his performance.
“Wardens rugby have always made me lift my performance in every local tournament, and it brought me back to the squad after I was dropped by the previous coach,” he shared. Vakadranu has also reminded his peers that as responsible adults and athletes, they should remain aware of the difference between right and wrong, especially during the holiday season when distractions are prevalent.
The Fiji 7s squad is currently taking a break for Christmas and New Year, with training set to resume in January. They have also lined up participation in the McDonald’s Coral Coast 7s event scheduled for January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.
This message not only serves as a reminder to rugby players but resonates with anyone who faces temptations during the festive period. It highlights the importance of discipline and integrity, especially in the realm of sports, and sets a positive example for the community.
As the new year approaches, there is an opportunity for athletes to refocus, recommit, and pursue excellence in their respective fields, fostering a spirit of sportsmanship and responsibility.
