Isake Katonibau, a former star of Fiji’s rugby sevens team, has made a significant appeal for change in sports policy during a live submission to the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs in Parliament. He proposed that national sports representatives should be officially recognized as workers under the proposed Work Care Bill 2025. Katonibau emphasized the urgent need for policy reform to acknowledge the crucial contributions that athletes make to the nation, both on and off the field.

During his testimony, Katonibau articulated the disparity in protections for athletes compared to military personnel, highlighting that while he receives coverage for injuries sustained in the military, his fellow athletes do not have the same safety net. He stated, “These athletes gave their all for their country, but they are not included in key policies – that needs to change.”

The Work Care Bill 2025, which aims to amend the country’s approach to worker compensation, includes provisions to address injuries and accidents in the workplace, but it does not currently encompass the unique risks faced by athletes. By advocating for their recognition as workers, Katonibau aims to ensure that athletes receive essential protections and compensation, similar to other labor sectors.

His appeal aligns with broader discussions in Fiji regarding labor rights and athlete welfare, especially as former players often navigate challenges like health issues and limited job opportunities after retirement. This request comes amidst growing awareness regarding the need to support athletes in their transitions to civilian life, particularly through educational initiatives and improved welfare.

The response from committee members appears to be supportive, indicating an openness to amend the legislation to include athletes within its framework. Katonibau’s proposal reflects a pivotal moment for sports representatives in Fiji, signaling a potential evolution in how the contributions and welfare of these individuals are recognized and protected by law.

As discussions advance surrounding this important legislation, there is hope that the recognition of national athletes as workers will not only elevate their status but also foster a more supportive environment that acknowledges their sacrifices and contributions to the country.
