Rugby Starlet Weighs Options Amid Scout Attention

Lepani Bavai, a centre for Marist Brothers High School’s Under-17 rugby team, has attracted interest from international scouts during the Vodafone Deans Trophy national finals. Following his key role in MBHS’s narrow 17-15 victory over Queen Victoria School in the semi-finals last Saturday, three scouts approached him as the team prepares to face two-time champions Ratu Kadavulevu School in the upcoming final.

When asked about the offers from the scouts, Bavai expressed his desire to pursue a career in rugby league, crediting his supportive parents for his journey. He acknowledged the challenging nature of the semi-final match but appreciated his teammates’ composure throughout the game. Bavai mentioned his eagerness to play in the final as a proud representative of his school.

MBHS U17 head coach Jonetani Rika emphasized that they will enter the final as underdogs, recognizing the need for improvement after a closely contested match last weekend. He noted Ratu Kadavulevu School’s established reputation in secondary schools rugby, referring to them as a champion team deserving of respect.

Rika acknowledged the significant challenge ahead, likening the matchup to a David and Goliath scenario, but stated the team is focused on the task at hand. He also mentioned that plans for a potential trip to Japan next year have not yet been made, as the priority remains on ensuring the students continue their education after the Deans Trophy.

Bavai, hailing from Makadru, Matuku in Lau, commented on the heightened competitive level of this year’s Deans Trophy, which has seen lesser-known schools making unexpected upsets.
