Lepani Bavai, the Under-17 center from Marist Brothers High School, has attracted attention from international scouts during the Vodafone Deans Trophy national finals. After playing a key role in his team’s narrow 17-15 victory over Queen Victoria School in the semi-finals last Saturday, Bavai was approached by three overseas scouts. His team now prepares to face two-time champions Ratu Kadavulevu School in the upcoming U17 final.
When interviewed by SUNsports, Bavai shared that he has decided to pause consideration of offers from scouts as he is focused on pursuing a career in rugby league. He expressed gratitude towards his parents, recognizing their unwavering support throughout his journey. Bavai acknowledged the challenge of the semi-final match but credited his teammates for their composure under pressure and expressed excitement about competing in the final.
MBHS U17 head coach Jonetani Rika noted that they would be entering the final as underdogs. He reflected on the close nature of the previous game and emphasized the need for improvement in preparation for the match against Ratu Kadavulevu School, which has a storied history in secondary school rugby. Rika anticipated a challenging contest, describing it as a “David and Goliath” matchup, but affirmed that they are determined to put forth their best effort.
Regarding potential prospects if they were to win the U17 final and have the opportunity to travel to Japan next year, Rika stated that their immediate focus is on the game against RKS, with future plans yet to be determined. He emphasized the importance of students continuing their education after the Deans Trophy, striving for academic success.
Bavai, hailing from Makadru in Lau, remarked on the growing competitiveness of the Deans Trophy this year, noting the surprises that have emerged from lesser-known schools.
