Fiji’s Flying Fijians fullback Vuate Karawalevu has drawn attention for his impressive cover defense and kicking in the recent match against Samoa. Fijian Drua head coach Glen Jackson indicated that Karawalevu, who hails from Dravuwalu in Kadavu, might be joining the team next season.
Karawalevu, a former captain at Marist Brothers High School, has also excelled in athletics, winning gold in the 400 meters at the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics competition. Jackson believes that Karawalevu would enhance the team’s backline.
At 23, Karawalevu had a stint with the Kaiviti Silktails in 2021 and was part of the Fiji Bati squad for the 2021 Rugby World Cup. He is currently contracted with the Waratahs for two seasons.
Jackson noted that 14 players from the Drua participated in the victory against Samoa, which ended 42-16 in favor of Fiji during the first Pacific Nations Cup match at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva on August 23. He also announced that the Drua will hold its pre-season camp in Kadavu and plans to upgrade their training facilities to support the development of elite players.
The team welcomes back Joseva Tamani, who can play both in the back row and as a lock, further strengthening their roster. Recent signings include Peni Ravai and Inia Tabuavou, with Jackson highlighting Ravai’s experience and mentorship for younger front row players.
A new center pairing will feature Iosefo Masi alongside Tabuavou, who recently showcased his skills in his second test match against Samoa, demonstrating speed, defensive ability, and determination.
Baden Stephenson, the new interim general manager of Fijian Drua, has announced plans for an international 10s tournament scheduled for December 13, aiming to include Skipper teams in the competition.
