Maika Ratuvere, an 18-year-old fullback for the Under-18 Deans winning team, is setting his sights on a dual career in sports and medicine. Hailing from Bagata, Cakaudrove, Ratuvere hopes to become either a nurse or a health inspector, establishing a solid foundation for his future beyond rugby.

Recently, Ratuvere represented the Queen Victoria School (QVS) old boys Under-19 side at the R.C. Manubhai Nataleira sevens tournament held at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori. His pivotal role as the fullback contributed to the success of QVS in winning the Deans trophy this year.

Ratuvere expressed his motivation to test his fitness in sevens rugby following the Deans competition, highlighting how QVS offered him a sense of independence through the school’s boarding life and the strong bonds he’s formed with his teammates.

His rugby journey began at a young age with the Kaji rugby teams of Nasinu and Tailevu, and he also played rugby league for his primary school’s U15 side. Reflecting on his passion for the sport, Ratuvere described rugby as both a hobby and a platform to showcase his talent.

Despite facing several injuries throughout his rugby career, he has shown great resilience in recovering to compete again. Ratuvere emphasized the importance of versatility and commitment in balancing sports with academic responsibilities, acknowledging the challenges but striving to maintain control over both areas.

Ratuvere enjoyed a sense of camaraderie with his teammates, stating, “There is a tight bond within the team in and off the field.” Although he was named in the U18 Fiji Secondary school extended squad, he faced a setback when he was dropped due to injury, but he remains determined to pursue his dreams.

In addition to rugby, Ratuvere has connections to Batiri village in Nadroga and is also involved in volleyball. With a focus on enhancing his fitness and seeking holiday job opportunities, he continues to stay motivated and dedicated to both his athletic and academic pursuits.

This story inspires young athletes who aspire to excel in sports while also prioritizing their education and future careers. Ratuvere’s commitment to both rugby and medicine showcases a balanced approach to life, illustrating that with determination and hard work, one can achieve success in multiple facets.
