At just 19 years old, Setareki Turagacoke, the youngest Flying Fijian rugby player, has had an incredible start to his career. However, the new year brought him heartbreaking news with the passing of his mother, Vani Ranavue, after a short illness.
Residing in France, Turagacoke described his mother as his biggest supporter. He recounted the joy she expressed upon hearing of his debut with the Flying Fijians during a Test match against Spain last November, a moment he cherishes deeply. “When I told her about my debut, she cried with happiness and said that I had finally achieved my dreams,” he shared.
Despite his mother’s illness, she chose to shield her children from the severity of her condition. Reflecting on his loss, Turagacoke expressed profound sadness and a desire to have thanked her for the sacrifices she made for her family. “It’s unfortunate she left us so soon, especially with my younger siblings still needing guidance,” he said.
Turagacoke’s desire to honor his mother was evident as he vowed to take responsibility for his siblings alongside his elder brother. “My brother and I will take over and provide for our younger sisters,” he mentioned, indicating a strong familial bond and sense of duty.
As he prepares to fly back to Fiji for her funeral, he reminds young people of the importance of familial ties, urging them to cherish their time with loved ones. His mother instilled valuable lessons in him, such as the importance of enjoying life, having faith, and trusting oneself. These lessons will stay with him as he navigates through this difficult time.
Despite this emotional setback, Turagacoke’s sporting achievements remain noteworthy. He played a pivotal role in his debut match against Spain, scoring a try that contributed to Fiji’s 33-19 victory. He has also begun establishing his presence in the French rugby scene, having played for Stade Francais Paris Rugby in various competitions.
Setareki Turagacoke’s journey, marked by both personal grief and professional success, highlights the resilience of the human spirit. In the face of loss, he continues to push forward, embodying a message of hope for both his family and fellow athletes. His experiences may inspire others to face challenges with strength and maintain close connections with their loved ones.
