Maika Ratuvere, a talented fullback from the Under-18 Deans championship-winning team, has expressed his desire to pursue a career in medicine alongside his passion for rugby. At just 18 years old and hailing from Bagata, Cakaudrove, Ratuvere aims to become a nurse or a health inspector as a solid career path when his rugby days come to an end.
Recently, he represented the Queen Victoria School (QVS) old boys Under-19 team at the R.C. Manubhai Nataleira sevens tournament held at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori. He earned praise for being part of the QVS U18 team that clinched the prestigious Deans trophy this year.
Ratuvere expressed his eagerness to test his fitness level in sevens rugby after finishing the Deans competition, indicating his commitment to personal improvement. He appreciates the opportunity that attending QVS provides, particularly the experience of school boarding life and the camaraderie he shares with his teammates.
Having played rugby since his early days with Nasinu and Tailevu teams and even taking on rugby league in his school years, Ratuvere’s dedication to the sport is clear. He recalls how he attended St. Joseph the Worker Primary School in Nakasi, eventually transitioning to rugby with a deep passion to demonstrate his skills.
Despite experiencing injuries throughout his rugby career, Ratuvere has shown resilience and the determination to recover and continue playing. He acknowledges the challenge of balancing sports with academic responsibilities but remains committed to excelling in both areas. He emphasizes the importance of dedication and discipline, skills that he has honed through rugby.
Notably, Ratuvere has strong connections to Batiri village in Nadroga and also enjoys playing volleyball. Currently, he is focused on enhancing his fitness and is on the lookout for a holiday job.
