Rugby Star Maika Ratuvere Sets Sights on Medical Career

Maika Ratuvere, the talented fullback from the Under-18 Deans rugby team, is looking beyond the playing field as he considers a future career in medicine. Hailing from Bagata, Cakaudrove, the 18-year-old is drawn to becoming either a nurse or a health inspector, demonstrating his desire to contribute positively to his community.

Recently, Ratuvere showcased his rugby skills by representing the Queen Victoria School (QVS) old boys’ Under-19 team at the R.C. Manubhai Nataleira sevens tournament in Nausori. He played a vital role in leading the QVS Under-18 team to victory in the Deans Trophy this year.

The determined athlete expressed his intention to test his fitness in sevens rugby following the Deans competition. He views his experience at QVS as an essential opportunity to gain independence through the boarding school environment, where he’s formed strong friendships.

Ratuvere’s journey in rugby began during his Kaji rugby days with the Nasinu and Tailevu teams. He also played rugby league in the halfback position for his U15 school team, having initially attended St Joseph the Worker Primary School in Nakasi. Fuelled by his passion for rugby, he aims to use the sport as a platform to showcase his talent while staying committed to his academic pursuits.

Despite facing challenges, including injuries, Ratuvere remains dedicated and disciplined, balancing his sports commitments with his educational aspirations. He has previously been named in the U18 Fiji Secondary School extended squad, although he had to withdraw due to injury.

Ratuvere also enjoys volleyball and is currently focused on improving his fitness while seeking a holiday job. His story highlights the importance of resilience and adaptability, proving that with hard work and determination, one can navigate multiple interests.

Through his aspirations in medicine and dedication to rugby, Ratuvere embodies the spirit of perseverance and community involvement. His journey serves as an inspiration to many young athletes balancing sports and education, reinforcing the idea that it is possible to chase one’s dreams while also preparing for the future.
