Maika Ratuvere, an 18-year-old rugby player from Bagata, Cakaudrove, has aspirations that extend beyond the rugby field. The talented fullback aspires to pursue a career in medicine, aiming to become either a nurse or a health inspector as a backup plan after his rugby career.
Recently, Ratuvere showcased his skills while representing the Queen Victoria School (QVS) Old Boys Under-19 team at the R.C. Manubhai Nataleira Sevens tournament held at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori. Notably, he was instrumental in helping his school’s Under-18 team secure the prestigious Deans trophy this year.
Reflecting on his sporting journey, Ratuvere expressed his desire to test his fitness in sevens rugby following the conclusion of the Deans competition. His choice of QVS was driven by the opportunity to experience independence and build lasting friendships through the school’s boarding lifestyle.
Having begun playing rugby during his Kaji rugby days with the Nasinu and Tailevu teams, Ratuvere also showcased his versatility by playing rugby league in the halfback position for the U15 school team. His love for the sport stems from a passion to demonstrate his talent and a desire to help others, as he looks forward to a future in medicine.
Despite facing several injuries throughout his rugby career, Ratuvere has managed to recover and return to the game, demonstrating remarkable determination and resilience. He emphasizes the importance of balancing sports with academics, noting the challenges and rewards that come with managing both commitments.
Ratuvere acknowledges the team spirit that exists both on and off the field, which has taught him discipline and commitment. Although he was initially named in the U18 Fiji Secondary School extended squad, an injury led to his eventual removal, highlighting the unpredictability of sports.
With maternal roots in Batiri village in Nadroga, he also enjoys playing volleyball and is currently focused on improving his fitness while seeking opportunities for holiday employment.
Maika Ratuvere’s story serves as an inspiring reminder that passion, perseverance, and a dedication to both sports and academics can pave the way for a successful future in whatever path one chooses, be it in rugby or healthcare.
This positive outlook encourages young athletes to blend their athletic pursuits with educational aspirations, ensuring they are well-equipped for life after sports.
