Maika Ratuvere, an accomplished fullback from the Under-18 Deans championship team, has expressed his ambition to pursue a career in the medical field alongside his passion for rugby. The 18-year-old from Bagata, Cakaudrove, aims to become either a nurse or a health inspector as a future fallback after his rugby career.
Recently, Ratuvere played for the Queen Victoria School (QVS) old boys Under-19 side at the R.C. Manubhai Nataleira sevens tournament held at Ratu Cakobau Park, Nausori. He was instrumental in leading the QVS Under-18 team to victory in the Deans trophy earlier this year.
Reflecting on his journey, Ratuvere mentioned the need to assess his fitness after the Deans competition while highlighting the valuable experiences gained at QVS, which provided him with a sense of independence and camaraderie among peers. His rugby career began in the Kaji rugby days, where he represented Nasinu and Tailevu teams. He also played rugby league as a halfback for the Under-15 school team.
Ratuvere’s love for rugby is deeply rooted in his desire to share his talent with others. He sees playing as not only a hobby but also as a pathway to help others, drawing from his own experiences overcoming numerous injuries throughout his rugby journey.
He recognizes the challenges of balancing sports and academics but remains committed to improving himself in both areas. Ratuvere emphasizes the importance of discipline developed through rugby, although he faced setbacks, like being dropped from the U18 Fiji Secondary school extended squad due to injury.
With maternal ties to Batiri village in Nadroga, Ratuvere also enjoys playing volleyball. He is currently focused on enhancing his fitness and seeking a holiday job to support his ambitions.
This narrative serves as an inspiring example of a young athlete dedicated to both sports and education, showcasing that with perseverance, one can achieve success both on and off the field. Ratuvere’s journey illustrates the potential for athletes to use their experiences in sports as a foundation for personal growth and community support, leaving a hopeful message for young players everywhere.
