Wests Tigers standout five-eighth Losana Lutu is one of eight players selected to represent the Fiji Bulikula in the upcoming Pacific Bowl Championship, as announced by head coach Joe Rabele over the weekend.
Rabele shared that the team scouted players in Australia, resulting in the selection of eight athletes, including the talented Lutu. Born in Suva and raised in Campbelltown, Lutu has rapidly ascended through the ranks of the Wests Tigers’ pathways.
Lutu showcased her skills during a breakout 2022 season, contributing to New South Wales’ triumph in the Under-19s State of Origin and securing her first title with the Wests Tigers in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership. She is contracted with the club until the conclusion of the 2026 season.
As the Fiji Bulikula prepares for their clash against Cook Islands Moana on October 26 in Suva, which serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup, Rabele emphasized the importance of selecting the best combination of players.
The coach has been closely monitoring the local women’s games, acknowledging that while they have several promising candidates for the 35-player squad, they must seek NRL approval for player eligibility.
Rabele pointed out the need for improvement, particularly in the local competition level, stressing the significance of the upcoming qualifier. He is committed to ensuring the team reaches the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup and is carefully planning their strategy for the qualifiers.
With a vision of a well-rounded team, Rabele intends for half of the 35-member squad to feature local-based players. He reflected on last year’s setback of not participating in the World Cup and expressed optimism for the current year, believing that it provides ample opportunity to identify strong players for the squad.
