Wests Tigers standout five-eighth Losana Lutu is one of eight NRLW players selected to represent Fiji Bulikula in the upcoming Pacific Bowl Championship. The announcement was made by Bulikula head coach Joe Rabele over the weekend.
Rabele shared that the team scouted talent in Australia, leading to the selection of these eight players, including the notable Lutu. Born in Suva and a product of the Campbelltown Junior club, Lutu has made significant strides within the Wests Tigers organization.
Lutu, a talented five-eighth known for her formidable running ability, experienced a remarkable season in 2022, contributing to New South Wales’ triumph in the Under-19s State of Origin and helping secure a title with the Wests Tigers in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership. She is contracted with the club until the conclusion of the 2026 season.
As the squad prepares for their match against Cook Islands Moana on October 26 in Suva, which also serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup Women, Rabele emphasized the importance of selecting the right combination of players.
“We’ve been observing the women’s games in the local competition,” noted Rabele, who has prior experience coaching the Fiji Bati to the semi-finals of the 2008 Rugby League World Cup.
Rabele mentioned that while he currently has several candidates for the squad of 35, they must gain NRL approval for player eligibility. He also expressed the need for improvements in the local competition’s standards.
“This qualifier is crucial for us as we aim for the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup,” he stated, acknowledging the importance of careful planning for the qualifiers.
He confirmed that 50 percent of the squad would be composed of locally-based players, and expressed disappointment that Fiji Bulikula did not participate in last year’s World Cup. This year, however, presents an opportunity to assess and identify promising players.
“This team will feature a mix of talent, and we are excited about the potential,” Rabele concluded.
