Spread the love

Setareki Turagacoke, a promising 19-year-old rugby player and the youngest member of the Flying Fijians team, has faced a heartbreaking loss at the start of 2024. He lost his mother, Vani Ranavue, after a brief illness, a devastating event that deeply affects him during what was meant to be a year of accomplishments.

Originally from Dakuinuku in Tailevu, Turagacoke debuted for the Flying Fijians in a test match against Spain on November 17 last year. He recalls his mother’s joyous reaction upon hearing the news of his debut, expressing pride in his achievements. “When I informed her of my Flying Fijian debut she cried and told me that I have finally achieved my dreams,” he said.

Turagacoke received the news of her passing while in France, which has led him to reflect on the invaluable support his mother gave throughout his journey. She always reminded him to enjoy the game, have faith, and trust himself. He expressed profound sorrow over her departure, especially considering his younger siblings still rely on their mother for guidance.

The family has faced their share of challenges, as Turagacoke revealed that his mother concealed her illness from him and his siblings. He expressed a desire to have thanked her for everything she did for them, stating, “If I had the chance to say goodbye; I would’ve thanked her for raising us up as she never once said no to my older brother and I.”

As Turagacoke prepares to return home for his mother’s funeral next Saturday, he urges the youth to cherish their relationships with their parents, emphasizing that life is unpredictable. “I urge them to spend time with their family at this moment and thank them for their love and support over the years,” he said.

Despite this personal tragedy, Turagacoke’s talent on the field remains undeniable. He made a significant impact during his debut against Spain and continued to contribute to his team’s efforts, even featuring in matches against Ireland and competing in French league competitions.

As he navigates this difficult time, Turagacoke represents hope, resilience, and the importance of family ties. His story serves as a poignant reminder of the values instilled in him by his mother—faith, support, and love—elements that will undoubtedly guide him as he continues to pursue his rugby career.
