Masivesi Dakuwaqa, the Rio 2016 Olympic gold medallist, has parted ways with the French rugby club Biarritz following a serious incident that left his teammate Pierre Pagès with significant injuries. Pagès required 20 stitches after being allegedly bitten by Dakuwaqa during a heated confrontation outside the club’s premises, which was not part of any official activity.

Biarritz released a statement confirming the termination of Dakuwaqa’s contract after an internal investigation concluded that the severity of the incident warranted immediate action. The club had initiated inquiries earlier in the month when reports surfaced of a player being “violently attacked” by a teammate.

In the aftermath of the altercation, another player attempted to intervene in the conflict but was also harmed, subsequently requiring medical attention. Dakuwaqa has since faced legal repercussions and was detained by authorities regarding the episode.

Biarritz expressed its disappointment over the situation and reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a culture of respect and unity among its players. This incident underscores the importance of maintaining professionalism and camaraderie within sports teams, reflecting the ongoing challenges that clubs face in managing player behavior.

While such occurrences are unfortunate, they also provide an opportunity for teams to reinforce their values and policies, ultimately contributing to a healthier sporting environment.
