The Fiji Bitter Lomaiviti and Mataso 7s rugby tournaments were inaugurated at the head office of Paradise Beverages Fiji Ltd in Walu Bay, Suva, yesterday. The launch featured the signing of sponsorship agreements, attended by officials and members of the media.
Mark Spencer, the General Manager of Paradise Beverages Fiji Ltd, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, highlighting the company’s commitment to fostering local rugby talent, creating opportunities, and promoting community-oriented programs that have a significant impact.
Isoa Lala, president of the Yalovata Rugby Club, organizer of the Lomaiviti 7s, expressed gratitude for Fiji Bitter’s involvement in improving the local community, noting that their contributions have led to the installation of 23 new streetlights. He also revealed that this year’s tournament lays the groundwork for the construction of two new bridges.
On the other hand, the Mataso 7s was also launched successfully. James Vunituraga, the tournament director speaking on behalf of the Mataso Nakorovou Rugby Club, thanked Fiji Bitter for their support and recognized the dedication of the organizing team. The Mataso 7s aims to facilitate the construction of a new bridge to improve access for nearby communities, particularly during adverse weather conditions, as highlighted by a viral video showing schoolchildren crossing a river in unsafe conditions.
The Mataso 7s tournament is scheduled for November 15-17 at Nadovu Park in Lautoka, while the Lomaiviti 7s will take place from November 21-23 at Nasau Park on Ovalau Island.
This initiative represents not only a celebration of rugby but also an investment in the future of local communities, signifying a commitment to social development and the enhancement of infrastructure that will benefit many residents for years to come. The upcoming tournaments are expected to be a platform for young talents to showcase their skills and a moment for communities to come together in support of these athletes.
