The late Epi Kolinivala, founder of the Kombat Uluinakau Rugby Club, would have felt immense pride witnessing the recent achievements of Ponipate Loganimasi. In 2021, Kolinivala brought the Uluinakau Babaas team to the Gaunavou Sevens tournament in Savusavu, where he discovered Loganimasi, who was then playing for a local club, Bilibili. Recognizing his talent, Kolinivala encouraged Loganimasi to join the Uluinakau team, marking the beginning of a successful journey.
Loganimasi, originally from Ono-i-Lau and raised in his mother’s village of Nabua in Savusavu, played a key role in the Fiji men’s rugby sevens team, which earned a silver medal at the Paris Olympic Games this year. He also made an impact in the Pacific Nations Cup, scoring two tries during his Test debut against Japan in the final.
Recently, Loganimasi secured a full-time contract with the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua for the upcoming Super Rugby Pacific season. The 26-year-old expressed his gratitude, stating, “I want to thank the Lord for the opportunity. It is a big one, and I feel blessed to be given the chance.”
He acknowledged the Drua management for their trust and shared his eagerness to start training with the team. In the 2023/24 World Series campaign, Loganimasi achieved an impressive feat, scoring 35 tries during his time with the Fiji men’s rugby sevens team. He also participated in the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens tournament with the Fiji Babaas.
Loganimasi, who is versatile enough to play outside back in 15s rugby, is looking forward to making his Super Rugby Pacific debut. Fijian Drua head coach Glen Jackson commented on Loganimasi’s signing, noting its significance for the club and highlighting the player’s exceptional performance in both 15s and sevens rugby.
Loganimasi is the fifth Flying Fijian to join the Drua this off-season, as the team continues to strengthen its roster, having previously signed notable players such as Joseva Tamani, Peni Ravai, Inia Tabuavou, and Vuate Karawalevu.
