Lepani Bavai, a center for Marist Brothers High School’s Under-17 team, has caught the attention of international scouts during the Vodafone Deans Trophy national finals. Following a narrow 17-15 victory against Queen Victoria School in the semi-finals last Saturday, Bavai was approached by three overseas scouts. The team now prepares to face two-time champions Ratu Kadavulevu School in the U17 final this Saturday.
In an interview with SUNsports, Bavai revealed that he has put the scouts’ offers on hold as he aspires to play rugby league. He credited his parents for their unwavering support throughout his journey, stating that they have always been his primary supporters.
Reflecting on the challenging semi-final against QVS, Bavai expressed gratitude to his team for maintaining their composure during the match. He is excited about the upcoming final and proud to represent his school.
Marist Brothers High School’s U17 head coach, Jonetani Rika, acknowledged that they will enter the final as the underdogs. He emphasized the need to correct mistakes made in the tight semi-final encounter to compete effectively against Ratu Kadavulevu School, a team with a strong championship history.
Rika noted that the Delainakaikai-based school is highly regarded in secondary schools rugby, and they respect their formidable record. He described the upcoming match as a “David and Goliath” battle but affirmed that they are committed to competing seriously.
When asked about future plans, including a potential trip to Japan if they win the U17 final, Rika stated that their immediate focus is on the upcoming match against RKS. He highlighted the importance of balancing sports with academics for the students.
Bavai, originally from Makadru, Matuku in Lau, remarked on the increased competition level of the Deans Trophy this year, with unexpected teams causing upsets.
