Rugby Rivals: Tonga and Fiji Clash in 100-Year Showdown

The Pacific Nations Cup match today between Tonga’s ‘Ikale Tahi and Fiji’s Flying Fijians marks a significant milestone, commemorating 100 years of Test rugby rivalry between the two nations. Their first encounter took place in 1924, and this weekend’s match will be the 95th meeting in this century-long history.

The Flying Fijians arrived in Fua’amotu on Wednesday, while the Tongans returned from Apia over the weekend. As both teams prepare for the critical competition, there is a prevailing sense of optimism among the Tonga Rugby Union (TRU) and the local Fijian community in Tonga, with expectations that the match will be exhilarating.

TRU CEO Aisea ‘Aholelei expressed anticipation for the event, emphasizing the significance of the centennial celebration. He noted the importance of having a Tier One nation like Fiji back in Tonga after nearly seven years and highlighted the cultural bond between the two nations.

In anticipation of the game, the Fijian community in Tonga is preparing a traditional welcome for their team, featuring a ‘sevusevu’ ceremony, which involves kava presentation. Jokini Sivo, president of the Fijian community in Tonga, mentioned that close to 400 Fijians in Nuku’alofa are eager to support their national team and are filled with excitement as the match approaches.

Sivo shared his belief that both teams have prepared well, predicting a fiercely competitive game. He acknowledged the challenges of predicting a winner due to the depth of talent in both squads.

‘Aholelei acknowledged that the Flying Fijians are likely the favorites, having recently triumphed over Manu Samoa 42-16, while Tonga faced a setback with a 43-17 defeat to the same team. A victory for Tonga is essential to keep their hopes alive for a top spot in the Pacific pool.

As the ‘Ikale Tahi undergo a rebuilding phase with new players and coaching staff, ‘Aholelei believes they will need to focus on fundamentals to secure a positive outcome. The match will be attended by Crown Prince Tupouto’a, and kickoff is set for 3 PM Tonga time, with expectations of a vibrant and enthusiastic crowd at Te’ufaiva. In another match, Japan will face the USA to decide the top team in the Asia Pool.
