Tailevu Rugby Union is set to face Naitasiri in a warm-up match this Saturday at Ratu Cakobau Park, serving as a critical preparation ahead of the 2025 Skipper Cup competition. This encounter is particularly significant for both teams as they seek to fine-tune their squads before the season kicks off next weekend.

Joe Rodan, the president of Tailevu Rugby Union, emphasized the importance of this game, describing it as an opportunity to evaluate player development across various strategic components including game structure and fitness levels. “We are having this warm-up match with Naitasiri so we can test our players on everything they’ve been working on,” Rodan explained.

The Tailevu squad has committed to an intensive training regimen over the past five weeks, with a focus on physical conditioning and skill enhancement under a dedicated coaching team. Rodan expressed confidence in the lineup, stating, “This year Tailevu will be the side to reckon with. We want to bring back the glory days.”

Additionally, Tailevu is ambitious in its aspirations, looking not only to compete for the Skipper Cup but also to reclaim the Farebrother Trophy, which they last won 18 years ago. With community support bolstering their ambitions, Rodan noted a holistic approach involving local engagement, saying, “We’ve taken our ‘sevusevu’ to 20 villages and shared our vision for 2025–2030. The Vanua is fully behind us.”

While Naitasiri has recently launched initiatives to strengthen their local talent pipeline, this warm-up match presents an engaging opportunity for fans and the rugby community to see both unions in action. This aligns with a growing trend among Fijian rugby unions, which highlights grassroots development and a commitment to nurturing homegrown talent.

This match not only promises to refine both teams’ competitive edge but also to energize local communities. As both unions prepare to embark on their 2025 campaigns, there’s a hopeful sentiment that these upcoming competitions will showcase new and emerging talents on the Fijian rugby stage.
