The Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens is set to kick off from March 28-30, 2025, marking a fresh chapter at the newly constructed Kai Tak Stadium. This exciting event will showcase the world’s top 12 men’s and women’s rugby teams competing before a projected crowd of over 120,000 fans, vying for crucial points in the HSBC SVNS standings with only two regular-season rounds remaining.

In the women’s competition, Pool A will feature the reigning Olympic Champions New Zealand facing off against Brazil, China, and the USA. Pool B includes powerhouses Fiji, France, Great Britain, and Ireland, while Australia, Canada, Japan, and Spain will compete in Pool D.

For the men, the tournament will see Argentina, fresh from their victory in Vancouver, battle against teams from Fiji, Ireland, and the USA in Pool A. Pool B consists of South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Uruguay, while Pool C sees Spain take on France, Great Britain, and Kenya.

Excitement fills the air as team captains explored the new venue, expressing their eagerness to play in such a state-of-the-art facility. New Zealand women’s captain Sarah Hirini emphasized the significance of Hong Kong as a sevens hub and her team’s ambition to continue improving throughout the season. Spain’s Pol Pla expressed pride in participating in his 50th Series event, reflecting on the special atmosphere that Hong Kong brings.

Currently, New Zealand’s women and Argentina’s men lead the SVNS standings after four rounds, with only the top eight teams qualifying for the HSBC SVNS World Championship in Los Angeles on May 3-4. The chase for the top positions is tight, with only four points separating the leading men’s teams.

The traditionally electrifying Hong Kong Sevens has welcomed some of the sport’s legends over the years, including Jonah Lomu and Portia Woodman. This year’s lineup includes seasoned Olympic medallists and rising stars who promise to add to the tournament’s legacy.

The three-day competition will commence daily at 10:30 AM local time, with finals scheduled for Sunday evening. With a record crowd anticipated and tickets still available, fans are encouraged to participate in this marquee event in the rugby calendar.

As World Rugby continues to champion gender equality, each HSBC SVNS event promises equal opportunities for men and women alike. The initiative to feature an all-female panel of match officials for the women’s competition further signifies the sport’s commitment to inclusivity.

The thrilling atmosphere of the Hong Kong Sevens fosters hope for the future of rugby sevens, with growing participation and diversity ensuring an unforgettable weekend of high-octane action.
