DHL Raiwaqa Rugby Football Club’s Under-21 prop and hooker, Ratu Saverio Matairakula, has attributed his team’s recent success at the 49th Fiji Bitter Marist 7s to two months of rigorous pre-tournament training. Competing at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, the team secured victories against Saint Michael Navesibasaga and Sydney Bula, with one more match scheduled against Marist this afternoon.
Matairakula, a 20-year-old from Kadavu, expressed pride in participating in the tournament, highlighting its significance as their second appearance in the competition, the first being last year. He noted that their coach has compared this prestigious event to the internationally recognized Hong Kong 7s, generating enthusiasm among the players.
Desiring to catch the attention of selectors for the Drua development squad, Matairakula has committed to increasing his performance levels on the field, inspired by Fijian Drua’s number 8, Meli Derenalagi. He hopes the team’s positive momentum from their morning wins will carry them through to a title victory by the tournament’s conclusion on Saturday.
The ongoing Marist 7s tournament not only presents opportunities for local teams to display their talents but also emphasizes the growth of rugby within the region. This year, the tournament has attracted significant participation, boasting an impressive lineup from both local and international teams. The excitement culminates with live coverage of matches, allowing fans to engage in the thrilling atmosphere of the event.
In a related context, the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s serves as an important platform for emerging rugby talents, demonstrating the commitment of various teams to excellence and the broader development of the sport in Fiji. Such tournaments contribute to uniting communities and inspiring future generations of athletes. The inclusive nature and competitive spirit of the Marist 7s promise to develop rugby culture across the Pacific, fostering hope and camaraderie among players and fans alike.
