In just a short span of 14 months in France, 18-year-old Setareki Turagacoke has quickly established himself in the rugby scene. The former Lelean Memorial School student made his debut in the Top 14 this year and recently received his first Test cap with the FIJI Water Flying Fijians.
Turagacoke was a last-minute addition to the team, stepping in for injured lock Isoa Nasilasila. The young player showcased his talent by being one of five try scorers in Fiji’s impressive 33-19 victory over Spain at the José Zorrilla Stadium in Valladolid.
Head coach Mick Byrne noted that patience was key to their success, especially after trailing 7-10 at halftime. The team managed to score four unanswered tries in the second half, with Ponipate Loganimasi, Sireli Maqala, Sam Matavesi, and captain Waisea Nayacalevu all contributing to the scoreline. Caleb Muntz successfully converted four of the tries, demonstrating strong team cohesion and skill.
Byrne emphasized the importance of maintaining possession and adhering to their game plan, reflecting on the team’s need to improve their early possession handling in the first half. As they look ahead, Fiji is set to face Ireland in their final Test match at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, where they aim to overcome their historical struggles against the team.
Captain Nayacalevu acknowledged the physicality and dynamism of the Spanish team, highlighting the importance of fitness in their preparations. The upcoming match against Ireland presents a fresh opportunity for the Flying Fijians to showcase their growth and determination.
In summary, Setareki Turagacoke’s rapid rise in rugby, along with his teammates’ resilience, paints a hopeful picture for the FIJI Water Flying Fijians as they prepare for their upcoming challenges. This young talent’s journey serves as an inspiration for aspiring athletes in Fiji and beyond, promising a bright future for the sport.
