Rising rugby star Motikiai Murray has solidified his future with the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua by signing a contract extension. This move highlights his growing importance within the team, marking a significant chapter in the young athlete’s burgeoning career.

At just 22 years old, the flanker from Lovoni village in Ovalau has traveled an impressive path through Fiji’s rugby ranks, having developed his skills at Ratu Kadavulevu School (RKS) and made significant contributions to the Fiji U20 team and the Drua development squad. His debut in the senior team came during the 2023 Super Rugby Pacific quarterfinal against the Crusaders, where he has since collected 12 caps and scored two tries.

Murray is known for his explosive pace and physicality, traits that have made him a standout player and fan favorite. Reflecting on his journey, he expressed gratitude towards his coaches, saying, “I’m thankful to the coaches for believing in me. I want to make my family and this Club proud.” This sentiment mirrors the positive narrative surrounding the Drua, which aims to cultivate local talent through clear development pathways.

Baden Stephenson, the General Manager of Rugby for Fijian Drua, has praised Murray’s dynamic playing style and his leadership, particularly his experience as captain of the Fiji U20s, where he led the team to a commendable Top 10 finish at the Junior World Rugby Championship in South Africa. In addition to his performances for the Drua, Murray has also participated in five matches for the Fiji Warriors, further establishing his reputation in the sport.

This contract extension not only signifies Murray’s growth as a player but also the Fijian Drua’s commitment to investing in young homegrown talent, promising a fruitful future for both the athlete and the team. As the new season approaches, fans eagerly anticipate watching Murray’s development and his contributions to the team’s success. His journey serves as an inspiring example for aspiring athletes, showcasing the potential within local sports frameworks.
