Ponipate Loganimasi made a significant choice when he decided to pursue a career in rugby instead of following the traditional path of attending university. His father, Joeli Kalougata, supported his son’s passion, encouraging him to pursue his dreams. In a remarkable short span of time, Loganimasi has established himself as a prominent figure in international rugby.

This year, Loganimasi achieved notable success by winning an Olympic silver medal with the men’s rugby sevens team. He was also recognized for his outstanding performance when he became the only Fijian player included in the World Rugby Men’s Sevens Dream Team of the Year, which was recently announced.

His rise in the sport continued with a memorable debut for the Flying Fijians during the World Rugby Pacific Nations Cup in September, where he scored two tries in a decisive 41-17 victory over Japan, securing the title for Fiji. Shortly after, he joined the Fijian Drua in October, furthering his professional career.

Loganimasi hails from Koroalau in Cakaudrove, and at 26 years old, he has already made a powerful impact in rugby. His family had urged him to follow a more conventional academic path, particularly at Brigham Young University in Utah, but he chose to chase his rugby aspirations instead. His father expressed pride in his son’s achievements and offered heartfelt support, emphasizing the importance of faith, hard work, and humility in achieving success. Kalougata stated that if rugby could provide for his son, he would wholeheartedly back his decision.

In addition to his rugby prowess, Loganimasi also excelled in athletics, securing a gold medal in the 200m at the Coca-Cola Games during his junior year at Navatu Secondary School. During high school, he balanced sports by playing rugby and indoor basketball.

Other notable players selected for the Dream Team alongside Loganimasi include Selvyn Davids from South Africa, Antoine Dupont from France, Aaron Grandidier Nkanang from France, Terry Kennedy from Ireland, Nathan Lawson from Australia, and Matías Osadczuk from Argentina.

This inspiring story of dedication and talent showcases how pursuing one’s passion can lead to extraordinary opportunities and achievements. With Loganimasi’s trajectory, the future looks bright for both him and Fiji in the realm of international rugby.
