Rugby Rising Star Penaia Cakobau Joins Flying Fijians: A Dream Realized!

Rising rugby talent Penaia Cakobau has been selected to join the FIJI Water Flying Fijians as they aim to reclaim the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup. This call-up fulfills his dream of donning the national jersey and competing alongside some of Fiji’s finest rugby players.

At 30 years old, Cakobau’s rugby journey began at Queen Victoria School, where he was part of the victorious squad that clinched the prestigious Vodafone Under-18 Deans Trophy in 2011. He gained recognition locally before taking his talents overseas, playing in France and for New Zealand’s North Harbor development team.

Cakobau returned to Fiji in 2018 and spent three years with Suva’s Skipper Cup team. In late 2022, he moved back to New Zealand to further his professional rugby career, with aspirations of landing a Super Rugby contract.

“When I received the call, I felt a mix of excitement and disbelief,” Cakobau shared. “I didn’t think this opportunity would come my way, but now it sets a new standard for me. I am committed to working hard to secure my position in this team.”

Joining the Flying Fijians gives Cakobau the chance to learn from distinguished players such as Captain Tevita Ikanivere and Mesulame Dolokoto. He aims to take over the position once held by Kavaia Tagivetaua and is eager to showcase his skills on the field.

“Every rugby player has goals they aspire to achieve,” Cakobau noted. “You write them down, keep yourself motivated, and train rigorously, especially when no one is watching. If you are ready to make sacrifices, anything is achievable.”
