Rugby Rising Star Penaia Cakobau Aims for Pacific Nations Glory

Rising rugby talent Penaia Cakobau has received a call-up to represent the FIJI Water Flying Fijians as they aim to reclaim the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup. This opportunity marks a significant step in Cakobau’s dream of donning the white jumper and playing alongside some of the country’s top rugby athletes.

At 30 years old, Cakobau’s journey in rugby began at Queen Victoria School, where he was part of the team that secured the Vodafone Under-18 Deans Trophy in 2011. After establishing his reputation locally, he took his skills abroad, playing in France and later with New Zealand’s North Harbor development team.

Cakobau returned to Fiji in 2018 and spent three years with the Skipper Cup team in Suva before heading back to New Zealand at the end of 2022. He is now dedicated to further honing his skills as a professional rugby player, with the goal of earning a Super Rugby contract.

“When I received the call, I felt a mix of excitement and disbelief,” Cakobau shared. “There was a time when I thought this opportunity was out of reach, but now it serves as a new benchmark for me. I know I need to work hard to secure my spot within this team.”

Joining the Flying Fijians provides Cakobau with the chance to learn from experienced players like Captain Tevita Ikanivere and Mesulame Dolokoto. He is stepping into a position previously occupied by Kavaia Tagivetaua and is eager to demonstrate his capabilities on the field.

“Every rugby player has a list of goals they aspire to achieve,” Cakobau stated. “Writing them down helps keep me motivated, and I train diligently, especially in unseen moments. I believe anything is possible if you’re ready to make sacrifices.”
