At just 20 years old, Phillip Baselala has shown remarkable resilience as he carves out his place in the professional rugby arena. The scrumhalf for Swire Shipping Fijian Drua reflects on the upcoming year of 2024 as a mix of highs and lows, highlighting his personal growth and steadfast dedication to the sport.

One of the most significant challenges Baselala faced this year was recovering from surgery, which sidelined him for eight long months. “It was a challenging time for me,” he admitted. “Coming out of surgery and not being able to play was tough, but I worked hard to get back on the field.” His comeback not only showcases his physical recovery but also demonstrates his mental fortitude and passion for rugby.

Already making history as the youngest player to transition from Fiji Secondary Schools Deans rugby to the Fijian Drua squad, Baselala had his Super Rugby Pacific debut against the Melbourne Rebels in Suva. Up until now, he has made four appearances in the Shop n Save Super Rugby competition and has his sights set on achieving even more in the upcoming seasons.

As Baselala looks towards 2025, he is determined to secure more playtime in what will be an increasingly competitive environment. “There’s a lot of competition from my brothers in the squad,” he stated. “But I’ll have to try my best and put in the work to make it happen.” With a new format set for the upcoming Super Rugby season, he recognizes the challenge ahead but believes in the team’s preparations. “Pre-season has been tough, but all the players are fit and ready. It’s going to be a tough competition, but the boys are working hard,” he added.

Originating from Solotavui, Nakasaleka in Kadavu, Baselala’s story serves as an inspiration for young athletes across Fiji, exemplifying that perseverance and hard work can lead to success in the face of adversity.

This article highlights Baselala’s tremendous journey—underscoring his dedication, resilience, and the bright future that lies ahead for him in rugby, serving as a beacon of hope and motivation for aspiring athletes.
