Respect for young female rugby players at Namata District School in Tailevu reflects the positive influence of the Get Into Rugby (GIR) Plus program. This program was recently showcased at a GIR Plus festival for primary schools held at Bidesi Ground in Laucala Bay, Suva.
Team coach Neli Nabogi shared insights on the program’s impact, highlighting its focus on life skills and initiatives aimed at combating violence. Initially, students were hesitant to discuss their experiences, but as the program progressed, they grew more vocal about their challenges.
The GIR Plus event not only celebrated sports but also promoted the holistic development of participants. The Namata team managed to prepare in just one week for the competition. Coach Nabogi, who has been instrumental in implementing the GIR Plus program since 2018, recounted the challenges she faced as a woman in a predominantly male sport. Her passion for rugby and dedication to teaching the young players have been crucial in overcoming these obstacles.
The initiative underscores a significant cultural shift towards inclusivity and empowerment for young women in sports, demonstrating how programs like GIR Plus can foster self-expression and resilience.
This story serves as a hopeful reminder of the strides being made towards gender equality in sports, with dedicated individuals laying a foundation for future generations of female athletes. The commitment to breaking down barriers and encouraging participation is paving the way for a more inclusive and supportive sporting environment.
