The Denver Rugby Movement, founded in 2022 by brothers Michael Love Pendleton, Joshua Roberts, and Kevin Huck—each born with developmental disabilities—has blossomed into a rugby family focused on inclusion and kindness, inspired by the Fiji 7s rugby team. With the support of their mother, Cathy Pendleton, and coach Paul Martin, the team is excitedly preparing for an international tournament in Spain scheduled for June 26-30.
Cathy Pendleton recounted how their journey began with a significant encounter at Nadi Airport in 2023, where the Fiji 7s players took time to connect with the boys, signing jerseys and demonstrating the power of kindness amidst their hectic schedules. This experience instilled profound values in the children, emphasizing love, community, and the importance of behaving graciously, a philosophy echoed in the mantra of the Fiji team: “Family first.”
The boys have flourished under the guidance of their team coach and the lessons imparted by the Fiji rugby stars, who emphasized the importance of discipline and safe practice. They even had the unique opportunity to train alongside the Fiji team and share meals, which left a lasting impression on both players and families. “The boys have been incredibly well-mannered. The Fiji 7s taught them that good behavior opens doors,” Cathy remarked.
As the Denver Rugby Movement steps onto the international stage, they carry with them not only rugby skills but also the invaluable spirit of community and support that Fiji embodies. Fundraising efforts, such as a recent event that raised $20,000, have helped make this journey possible, highlighting the commitment and support from their community.
