The Jone Tabuya Shield is set to make a much-anticipated return after nearly 30 years, as it will be contested this weekend during the final of the Vodafone Deans Southern Zone Secondary Schools Rugby Union. Originally awarded to the winner of the under-19 division, this prestigious prize will now be up for grabs in the under-18 grade.

The final match will feature a thrilling showdown between Marist Brothers High School and Suva Grammar School, both renowned rugby strongholds. The excitement surrounding the event was palpable at the launch of the Southern Zone Deans finals, held at the Vodafone Triangle in Suva, where Rusiate Wadali, president of the Southern Zone Secondary Schools Rugby Union, announced the shield’s revival. He also revealed that the winner would receive a total of $2,000, which includes an additional $1,000 bonus alongside the final match winnings, while the runner-up will receive a combined $1,000.

Vodafone Fiji’s Sponsorship Manager, Adriu Vakarau, also attended the launch and expressed the company’s pride in supporting the Deans Championship, emphasizing Fiji’s deep-rooted passion for rugby. Vakarau remarked that Vodafone’s investment in the event goes beyond mere sponsorship, as it aims to nurture future rugby talents who can bring further pride to the nation.
