The British Army’s rugby team recently completed a Southern Hemisphere tour that served as both a sporting event and a heartfelt reunion for many Fijian players involved. Led by former England winger Semesa Rokoduguni, the team engaged in matches against the New Zealand Defence Forces and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF). Their tour concluded with a spirited yet challenging match where they faced the RFMF, culminating in a 50-31 loss.
Rokoduguni expressed that the tour had been a long time coming, allowing several players to return to their roots in Fiji. With about nine Fijian players on the team, including former Wardens and national sevens representative Solodrau Radianirova, this experience was particularly special. Some members had not returned home in many years; for instance, their backs coach, Jonasa Bulumakau, hadn’t been home for 21 years. This reconnection was a significant aspect of the trip, with players enjoying the beautiful Fijian weather and spending time with family.
Adding to the excitement, the British Army’s visit coincided with the Flying Fijians’ impressive 29-14 win over Scotland at the HFC Bank Stadium. Rokoduguni noted that witnessing this victory stirred mixed emotions, but he was pleased for his friends on the Scottish team and applauded the performance of the Fijian side.
After completing their matches in Fiji, the British Army team is set to continue their tour, heading to Brisbane for an upcoming match against the Australian Defence Forces, which provides them with another opportunity to build camaraderie and competitive spirit both on and off the field.
This visit not only reinforces the bonds formed through rugby but also highlights the heartwarming nature of sports as a connector between cultures and communities. As the focus shifts to upcoming matches, fans from both nations can look forward to thrilling displays of athleticism and the celebration of rugby culture.
