Navakavu Rugby team captain and former national 7s player, Peni Gaunimeke, took pride in his team’s effort despite a challenging 30-5 loss to Army Green in the opening round of the Escott Shield, a key event in the Suva Rugby Club Competition. Gaunimeke emphasized the resilience and determination demonstrated by his young squad, many of whom are fresh out of high school and eager to make a mark in rugby at higher levels and perhaps even internationally.

The team’s objective for the season is to break into the top eight of the tournament, reflecting their ambition and commitment to improving with each match. Gaunimeke is optimistic about his team’s chance at bouncing back in the upcoming round two, which will be held at Bidesi Park in Suva next weekend.

This sentiment echoes the spirit seen in the Navala Youth rugby team, which is gearing up for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament. Like Navakavu, the Navala Youth team has faced challenges, including adverse weather and limited training facilities, yet they continue to display exceptional determination and resilience.

Both teams represent a hopeful narrative within the rugby community, highlighting how sports can inspire not only athletes but also the wider community. Their journeys underscore the potential for personal development and community unity through dedication and collective effort. Such stories serve as a reminder of the positive impact sports can have, motivating others to strive for their own goals.
