The Suva Rugby Union has received a significant boost for its 2025 Skipper Cup campaign, as the Suva City Council has granted approval for the use of part of Karsanji Bhindi Park – Bhindi Industrial for its weekly competitions.

SRU chairman Viliame Draunibaka expressed gratitude towards the Suva City Council for recognizing the union’s urgent need for enhanced sports infrastructure. While formal arrangements are still being finalized, Draunibaka emphasized that this development signals a positive milestone for rugby in the Suva communities and urban settlements served by the union.

For over a century, the Suva Rugby Union has played a vital role in the local community, providing numerous young men and women the opportunity to engage in club and community teams. Draunibaka noted that this engagement encourages healthy and productive activities, diverting youth from negative influences like crime and drugs.

Furthermore, the union has been instrumental in identifying and cultivating talent, leading many players to prestigious teams such as the Fijian Drua and Flying Fijians. It has also created pathways for players to secure overseas rugby contracts and pursue careers in fields such as the Military, Police, and Corrections services.

Draunibaka reiterated that the new development will further enhance the SRU’s capacity to nurture talent and strengthen community bonds through rugby, highlighting the sport’s positive impact on the lives of many individuals.

This initiative is a promising step forward, illustrating how local governance and community-focused organizations can collaborate to foster sports development and improve community living standards.

Summary: The Suva Rugby Union has received approval from the Suva City Council to use part of Karsanji Bhindi Park for its competitions, significantly boosting its 2025 Skipper Cup campaign. The initiative underscores the importance of sports infrastructure for community engagement, youth development, and talent nurturing in rugby.
