Fiji National University (FNU) and the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) are collaborating on a new initiative aimed at making rugby officiating more accessible for individuals in Fiji. This development follows discussions between key figures, including FNU’s Natabua Campus Head Perry Gabriel and FRU’s National Rugby Referee Manager James Bolabiu.
Gabriel highlighted FNU’s teacher-training campuses as ideal venues for referee training due to their extensive facilities and the ability to reach future educators nationwide. Bolabiu reiterated the FRU’s commitment to improving refereeing standards by offering comprehensive training. The initiative will involve a six-week workshop series, featuring two-hour weekly sessions leading up to the rugby season. The training will incorporate practical on-field experiences and virtual seminars, where global referees will share insights and expertise.
Bolabiu pointed out that this structured program is designed not only to enhance the professional skills of aspiring referees but also to provide a potential income avenue for graduates. With FNU’s support and Fiji’s rich rugby tradition, this initiative is poised to elevate the sport’s standards and create new career opportunities for young individuals in the country.
This collaboration reflects broader efforts within Fiji’s sporting framework, where enhancing officiating quality is seen as vital to fostering grassroots participation and talent development. Such initiatives echo similar efforts in other sports, such as futsal and football, underscoring a comprehensive commitment to improving refereeing across various disciplines.
Fiji’s strong focus on developing skilled referees promises a bright future for rugby and other sports, generating optimism and fostering a vibrant sports culture within the community.
