Rugby Prodigy Holds Off Scout Offers for a Higher Calling

Lepani Bavai, a centre for Marist Brothers High School’s Under-17 rugby team, has caught the attention of international scouts during the Vodafone Deans Trophy national finals. Following his standout performance in the semi-final match where MBHS narrowly defeated Queen Victoria School 17-15, three overseas scouts approached Bavai. This Saturday, he will lead his team against two-time champions Ratu Kadavulevu School in the U17 final.

When asked about the scout offers, Bavai indicated that he has decided to delay any decisions as he aims to pursue a career in rugby league. He expressed gratitude to his parents for their unwavering support throughout his journey.

Reflecting on the challenging semi-final against QVS, Bavai praised his teammates for maintaining their composure under pressure. He expressed excitement about playing in the final, stating, “I’m grateful for the opportunity to represent my school.”

MBHS U17 head coach Jonetani Rika acknowledged their underdog status going into the final but emphasized the importance of learning from past mistakes. He noted the strength of Ratu Kadavulevu School, a well-respected team in secondary school rugby.

“This will be a David and Goliath battle, but we are here for a reason and that is to mean business,” Rika remarked. When discussing potential plans for a trip to Japan if they were to win, he reiterated the team’s focus on the upcoming match against RKS and the importance of balancing academics with sports.

Bavai, who hails from Makadru, Matuku in Lau, mentioned that the overall level of competition in the Deans Trophy has improved, with lesser-known schools causing upsets this year.
