This picturesque scenario unfolded during the Fiji Bitter Wairiki 7s Carnival, held from December 11-14 at the Wairiki Parish Grounds in Taveuni. Marking the final leg of the Fiji Bitter 7s series, this tournament showcased an exhilarating blend of competitive spirit, community engagement, and cultural essence.
Now in its 17th year, the Wairiki 7s began in 2007 and remains a focal point of activity in Taveuni, embracing the local Catholic parish’s rich heritage. Competitors participated across various categories, including junior ranks, under-18-21, and men’s divisions, with teams coming from all corners, including as far as Kadavu and local teams from Lavena.
The journey to the tournament began in Suva, where reporters boarded the MV Lady Daya to Taveuni. Passengers enjoyed captivating views of lush landscapes and sparkling azure waters during the ferry ride. Upon arriving, the team settled in and prepared for the event, connecting with local officials and scouting nearby towns for supplies.
As the tournament commenced, junior matches led to an impressive display of talent from 24 under-18-21 teams and 20 men’s teams. Coaches, like Ilai Nameke from Supercool Vatukoro, shared stories of the fundraising efforts undertaken to make their participation possible, underscoring the commitment seen throughout grassroots rugby.
Despite a brief scare when a ferris wheel malfunctioned, leading to emergency response efforts, the overall carnival atmosphere thrived with energy, good food, and community spirit. Local hospitality shone through with traditional meals served generously to guests and participants.
Viti Roofing Devo Babas clinched victory in the men’s division, securing a $12,000 prize, while Aloha Brothers and Lilian Amazon won in the under-18-21 and women’s categories, respectively.
As the tournament concluded, the team reflected on the memorable experiences and connections made in Wairiki. Their return voyage was marked by a quiet contemplation of the rich culture and resilient community spirit they witnessed.
