The Fiji Bitter Wairiki 7s Carnival took place from December 11 to 14 at the Wairiki Parish Grounds in Taveuni, Fiji, marking the culmination of this year’s Fiji Bitter 7s series. This vibrant tournament featured thrilling rugby matches, showcasing the raw essence of grassroots sports intertwined with community spirit and religious respect, highlighted by a midday prayer that paused the games.
Celebrating its 17th year, the Wairiki 7s brought together teams from across the islands, ranging from junior to men’s categories, in a showcase of skill and teamwork. The local community played an integral role in the event, providing hospitality to teams and officials from various regions, as well as maintaining a festive atmosphere with activities like food stalls.
The tournament included an adventurous ferry trip from Suva to Taveuni, during which participants enjoyed stunning views of the island, known for its lush landscapes and vibrant waters. Despite some challenges, including a malfunctioning ferris wheel that prompted a nationwide ban, the event fostered a sense of unity and celebration.
Competing teams displayed their dedication through inspiring stories, such as fundraising efforts to attend the event. The closing ceremonies saw Viti Roofing Devo Babas take home the men’s title with a prize of $12,000, while other categories were won by the Aloha Brothers and Lilian Amazon teams.
