The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Accident Compensation Commission Fiji (ACCF) have teamed up with the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) to tackle a pressing concern: reducing road accidents and fatalities throughout Fiji.
LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized the collaboration’s goal to enhance road safety adherence among Fijian users, utilizing the influential presence of rugby players and the extensive reach of FRU’s platform. “This innovative partnership recognizes the critical role of sports, particularly rugby, in shaping attitudes and behaviors in Fiji,” Rokosawa stated. He highlighted the respect that rugby players command within the community, making them effective advocates for responsible road use.
The initiative, set to span the next four years, aims to create a robust culture of road safety awareness and responsibility. “Rugby is a unifying force in Fiji, and the influence of players extends far beyond the field. Through this partnership with FRU, we are sending a clear message that road safety is a collective responsibility,” Rokosawa added.
Avnil Pratap, FRU General Manager for Commercial, Broadcast & Marketing, affirmed the union’s commitment to the well-being of Fijians on and off the field, noting, “Rugby players are role models in our communities, and their voices carry weight. We hope to inspire positive behavior and encourage everyone to prioritize safety on the roads.”
This partnership represents a proactive step toward a safer future for all road users in Fiji, harnessing the love of rugby to instill important safety lessons. By leveraging the influence of admired athletes, the goal is to cultivate a collective approach to road safety, ultimately leading to improved community well-being.
In summary, LTA, ACCF, and FRU are combining forces to utilize the power of rugby in promoting road safety, fostering a culture that urges each individual to take responsibility for their safety and that of others. This initiative not only aims to decrease road accidents but also uplifts the community spirit, emphasizing the role of sport in societal change.
